Xbox Milestones & Next-Gen Updates Project Helix, Halo, GTA 6

Xbox Milestones and Next-Gen Updates

By News Desk | May 29, 2026

It has been a significant week for Xbox, with the brand hitting a rare sales milestone in Japan while simultaneously setting the stage for its future with the next-generation console, Project Helix. From hardware achievements to developer updates and major game releases, here is the latest news from the world of Xbox.

Xbox Breaks Sales Record in Japan

In a surprising turn of events, the Xbox Series X|S has officially surpassed 700,000 units sold in Japan. According to Famitsu sales data, the current generation of Microsoft consoles has achieved what many thought impossible after the poor performance of the Xbox One, which sold only 142,000 units during its lifetime .

The breakdown of the 700,000 units includes the Xbox Series X (326,910), the Xbox Series X Digital Edition (31,136), and the Xbox Series S (342,096). While this figure is still dwarfed by the PlayStation 5 (7.55 million) and the Nintendo Switch 2 (5.8 million) in the region, it represents a significant recovery for the brand. To date, only the Xbox 360 has sold better in Japan, moving 1.6 million units largely thanks to its deep library of Japanese Role-Playing Games (JRPGs) .

Microsoft confirms that additional details regarding Project Helix will arrive later this year.

While the current hardware is making strides, Microsoft is already looking ahead. The company has confirmed that it will share more details about its next-generation console, codenamed Project Helix, later in 2026.

Jason Ronald, VP of Next Generation at Xbox, recently clarified that while a recent “Game Dev Update” served primarily as a recap of announcements from the Game Developers Conference (GDC), Major announcements are anticipated for fans in the months ahead. “We will have more to share about Project Helix later this year,” Ronald stated on social media .

The bar for the new console has been set high. At GDC 2026, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma revealed that Project Helix will “lead in performance” and is designed to bridge the gap between PC and console gaming, allowing players to access both libraries seamlessly. The console is reportedly “deep in development,” powered by a custom AMD SoC. Early hardware (Alpha Kits) is expected to ship to game developers in 2027, suggesting a potential launch in late 2027 or 2028 .

Halo: Campaign Evolved Relies on Outsourcing

In game development news, a new report has surfaced regarding the highly anticipated Halo: Campaign Evolved. According to industry insider Rebs Gaming, development of the Unreal Engine 5 remake has relied heavily on external contractors.

The report suggests that a significant amount of “core programming and design” has been outsourced, leading some sources to claim that “it’s not really an in-studio project” for Halo Studios (formerly 343 Industries). Despite this, the game is reportedly on track for a release this year, with a possible launch date of July 28. The remake is expected to feature new weapons, armor skins for Master Chief, and a “Campaign Remix” mode to increase replayability .

GTA 6 Marketing Ramps Up on Xbox

Finally, Rockstar Games appears to be preparing for the next phase of Grand Theft Auto VI‘s marketing. Xbox regional accounts across the Americas—including Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, and Colombia—have recently begun posting “wishlist” prompts for the upcoming title.

This coordinated push indicates a larger marketing campaign is coming soon, even without a third trailer yet. According to Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick, the full-scale marketing campaign for GTA VI is slated to launch in summer 2026.
